Did you regret not having your ovaries removed when you had your hysterectomy?

Hey ladies. I'm feeling so frustrated right now. I went for my annual with the dr I didn't chose for my hysterectomy last year. I cried through like the whole appt (due to anxiety). Anyways, I updated him about the pain I'm still having especially when I go to the bathroom and during sex and he is 100% convinced it's because my ovaries weren't taken. He said, "now that he (the other dr) is gone/retired, I can say this. I completely disagree with everything that he did. He didn't take care of your pain and you wouldn't be where you are mentally right now (anxiety because of the pain) if you had had the total instead of the partial". I'm feeling so stupid right now. I didn't want to have surgical menopause ap I really thought I made the right and conservative choice. My gyno certainly doesn't think I made the right choice. He ordered an ultrasound just to make sure there aren't any cysts or masses on the ovaries but he's convinced the issue is still endometriosis. I feel like I wasted all the time and money and recovery and pain and all of it on my surgery last year to be in the same place now I was in April of 2017.

Anyone have thoughts on this? Would you have YET ANOTHER surgery 1 year out?

Re: Did you regret not having your ovaries removed when you had your hysterectomy?

Just to clarify, a total hysterectomy is when the entire uterus, which includes the cervix is removed. A partial hysterectomy leaves the cervix portion of the uterus intact. Removal of the ovaries is a surgery called oophorectomy and isn't a part of the definition of any type of hysterectomy.

Did your doctor explain that whether or not the ovaries are removed there is still a chance that you could have trouble with endometriosis? Removing them doesn't guarantee that you will be free of pain. It's important that you research this carefully before consenting to another surgery that may or may not help with your problem. Consider at least consulting with an endometriosis specialist. There is information to use in our Endometriosis Articles that can help with your research.

Wanting to avoid surgical menopause is not a stupid thing! Surgical menopause can be very challenging with or without hormone therapy. Something to think about is that just because your current doctor doesn't agree with what your previous doctor did or didn't do, doesn't mean the surgery you had wasn't right for you. It's this doctor's opinion. You could go to another doctor and have an opinion that's different from what you have already heard.

Re: Did you regret not having your ovaries removed when you had your hysterectomy?

April Dawn has given you a lot of good comments to think about. I just wanted to add that we all made the best decisions possible about our surgeries at the time. I am sure you did, too, so no point in second guessing the past.

And one more thing: Doctors see a lot, and they can't help but develop biases over the course of their career. They are only human! Personally, I would be little leery of swallowing whole any opinion handed out before he has even done any imaging.

Best of luck to you! I hope you are able to work with someone you trust to get to the root of your pain. Hang in there, and keep in touch!
