Almost 3 weeks post hysterectomy (10/26): Recovery is SLOW going

My surgery was on Oct. 26. I had a really good day last week and probably over did it. I was feeling normal and had my daughter drive me over to the store. She did all the cart pushing and all the lifting. I was doing very well until we were walking to the car. I was feeling pain and the next day then started to spot again. I’ve been spotting off and on since, and feeling about 50%. Pain when I walk so been limiting walking and mostly sitting and sleeping. At what point does this seem to get better? When can I go to the store and just walk without pain?

Re: Recovery is SLOW going

You had major surgery less than three weeks ago, so you're still in the early stages of recovery. It's normal at this stage to feel better, try to do more and then find that you've overdone it a bit. Usually resting for a few days will take care of it. If it's been about a week since the pain and spotting started and if resting alone doesn't seem to be making it go away, you might want to put a call in to your doctor.

We have some videos that may give you a better idea of what to expect during each two-week period of your recovery.

Checking in with your recovery thread will give you a chance to compare notes with other women who had surgery the same week you did.

For me it was after five weeks that I started to walk normally. At that point my incision had finally closed up. I still haven’t attempted to do any grocery shopping yet.

Re: Recovery is SLOW going

I didn't start turning the corner on feeling human again until my 4th week, and even then I couldn't stand long, sit long or bounce up and down a flight of stairs with my usual exuberance. Through 8 weeks, whenever I'd do something "new" the first time post op which was a little more than I was used to, I'd get dull cramps and swelling for the rest of the day.

It's a slower journey than most of us expect . Definitely not like getting over a stomach bug!

Thank you! This sure is driving me crazy. I’ve seen almost everything on Netflix! Lol

After a while, Netflix is like trying to live on nothing but sweets. I found it useful to spend time during recovery doing some intellectually dense reading and catching up on small mending projects.

This article on Boredom Busters may give you some ideas.

Great! Thank you! I’ll try to work on my paintings, sitting too straight seems to hurt, so maybe I’ll focus on drawing for now.

I'm only 3 days behind you and feel the same way...I feel like I'm healing at a snails pace. I overdid it Monday and am still feeling like I'm paying for it.

I'm a netflix, hulu & amazon prime video junkie. What kind of shows/movies do you like? I might suggest some new shows you might love & pass healing time binge watching them )

Re: Almost 3 weeks post hysterectomy: Recovery is SLOW going

I just started my third week today and have been miserable with an infection the last few days. But, that aside, I’m going to bang out my Christmas cards while I can’t move around too much. At least I’ll be a bit productive.

Re: Almost 3 weeks post hysterectomy: Recovery is SLOW going

I'm one day ahead of you. I sooooo get it! It;s so much slower than I thought. Can't stand or sit for too long either. Hang in there sister! I also had to have pelvic floor surgery and I wasn't sure if that is the pain or just hysterectomy or both! Did you have any other surgery aswell??
Its very reassuring to hear we are kinda at the same place, makes me feel like this is some kind of normal! Sneidn you lots of healing vibes!! You've got this sister!!
