Ovarian cysts

Well, I just got the results back from an ovarian sonogram. It showed 2 simple cysts (2.4 cm & 1.1 cm) on the left ovary. The right ovary is fine. And I have no cervix or uterus! I have been having some significant discomfort on that side. And a lot of indigestion!

I have never had cysts before and am really paranoid about them because I had cervical cancer. Has anyone else had them? Should I be worried? Is it bad to have more than one on the same side? Did I make a mistake by not having my ovaries taken out with everything else?

Freaking out!

Ovarian cysts

Julie dear, I am so sorry to hear you are having new problems! My doctor and I were afraid of that happening to me, so even before he got in there we had decided to remove my ovaries. As it turned out, he would have taken them anyway once he saw them because they were full of cysts, as was the paratubal tissue, and they were both hemorrhaging during surgery.

The history of the decision to take them, sight unseen was made for three reasons:

1) I have had ovarian cysts since I was 10 years old that have often, but not always, given me great pain.

2) My great grandmother had ovarian cancer and all other women in my family for generations hasve had some kind of trouble or another requiring hysterectomies fairly young, so who knows if they would have developed ovarian cancer or not.

3) Doc said at my age, they were already beginning to stop functioning at full level, so why bother with them with the other issues mentioned above, if we were going in for the uterus anyways.

My cysts were considered "normal" and benign but were causing bleeding and pain.

There are different types of cysts, the most common of which are functional...meaning they are the result of the normal functioning process of the ovaries and are typically nothing to worry about in and of themselves. And yes, there can and often are multiple cysts found. The ones to worry about are more rare. What your doctor needs to think through is what to do to discover what type you have, and if it's any danger or not. The sonogram can often tell if yours are more fluid filled or more of a solid formation. So can a laporoscopy. These tests can both tell the doctor a lot. Do some research on line about the different types and then ask your doctor.

It does not necessarily mean more surgery. Don't grab ahold of trouble before it comes your way. We all have enough without borrowing it. Okay?! Just keep up with the doctor and let him know your fears and concerns and ask LOTS of questions until you're sure of what's going on and are comfortable with the outcome.

Please keep us posted! We'll all be praying for you and waiting to hear how it's going!
