Leep question

Hi, I am now 9 months post op and doing ok. This time I am here for my sister.

She had an abnormal pap and went in today for a colposcopy. Was told she now needs this LEEP procedure.

With my own issues, I never had this and know nothing about it, so here I am, asking questions.

Why do they do the LEEP? Is it to destroy abnormal cells? Or is it done to biopsy the abnormal cells?

How about the procedure itself?

Please any help or explanations will be greatly appreciated.

Leep question

Hi Kathy,

The LEEP procedure is done to remove the abnormal cells. They use a heated electrified wire loop to cut out and destroy the tissue. The tissue that's removed is sent to pathology for biopsy. Often no further treatment is needed and the patient is instructed to return for frequent pap tests...usually every 3 or 4 months.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that it all goes well for your sister.

I had a leep

I too had to have a leep back in 1999. So far so good, had to have lots of follow up paps, but so far all is clear. My thoughts and prayers are with you both, but I'm sure she will be just fine. The procedure is really not bad at all. Love to you both, Cathy

EM and Tickles

Thank you both for your help in explaining this procedure, and for your kind words.

Needless to say, we both are concerned, especially since we just went through my surgery.

I knew this was/is the place to be.

Just stopping in to wish your sister well with her LEEP. I hope all goes well and that she requires no further treatment.
