Upcoming September hysterectomy - complex hyperplasia with atypia - cervix options

Hello, I'm 54 years old. I've been diagnosed with complex hyperplasia with atypia. I've spoken to my surgeon once so far and asked that if it's possible please keep the ovaries. He agreed and is planning a vaginal hysterectomy. As far as I know my cervix is healthy with no sign of pre-cancerous cells or even HPV. Has anyone kept their cervix with this diagnosis? I know the recovery time would be much quicker and I would still need pap-smears in the future (I'm ok with that).

Re: Upcoming September hysterectomy - complex hyperplasia with atypia - cervix options

Complex hyperplasia with atypia is the form of endometrial pre-cancer that has the highest risk of becoming endometrial cancer. Surgically, it's treated much the same way as endometrial cancer. Since the inner end of your cervix can contain endometrial cells, the cervix is removed just in case any of the endometrial cells - or even just *one* endometrial cell - in the cervix are pre-cancerous or cancerous.

Also, a vaginal hysterectomy necessarily removes the cervix. You'd have to have a laparoscopic or abdominal hysterectomy instead.

Recovery time if you keep your cervix is a bit quicker. I'm not sure I'd say "much" quicker. Recovery's still going to be a matter of weeks.

My own hysterectomy was for endometrial cancer, so I had my uterus and cervix removed six years ago. My vaginal cuff (seam where the cervix used to be) healed nicely and I've had no problems with it since.
