Upcoming October hysterectomy - body pillow and special needs child questions

So my surgery is still over a month away. I have read through a lot of things, but I had a few questions.

I read a lot about a body pillow to put under your stomach to help support it. My stomach doesn't come out past my hips....I'm slender...will this still be something I will need?

Also, my kids are 17, 13, and 9...they can completely take care of themselves...except my 13 year old he is special needs...think of him as a big 2 year old. How long before I came change diapers and dress him?

I need to plan out help. My husband is very supportive, but doesn't want to take FMLA if he doesn't have to. He works a rotating shifts...some weeks days, some weeks nights...so I'm trying to plan out help for it.

Re: Upcoming October hysterectomy - body pillow and special needs child questions

Hi Troopwife1 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

Regarding a body pillow. I am a slim lady too. I did not need a body pillow under my stomach to help support it. What I did use was a standard sleeping pillow over my stomach at night to help protect it from my cats who love to walk on me.

Regarding your special needs child. It will be a while before you can do much with him - think weeks. You will have lifting restrictions: 10 lbs for 6 weeks and 20 lbs for 8 weeks is common. These also apply to pushing and pulling. Bending can be very problematic. You will have to arrange help for him. Here is an article that may provide information:
Recovering from Hysterectomy with Small Children

Do talk to your doctor about your scenario, and when you will be released to take over the care again for your son. It may have to be done slowly and in stages.
