Upcoming hysterectomy 3/26: I have IBS-C what will get things moving better before surgery?

I have IBS-C I have been struggling to get anything near regular bowel movements before I have my surgery in 14 days. It's getting better but still having to strain way too much. I am taking slippery elm, milk thistle and Turmeric. I am hypothyroid and take 200mg of magnesium and day. I take digestive enzymes as well. What else can I take or do to get my digestive track lined out before surgery? I like to take more natural things.

Please keep in mind that some supplements, including turmeric, can thin your blood or otherwise affect your surgery, so you'll need to check with your surgeon before taking anything; if he wants you to clear out your bowels beforehand, he'll give you specific instructions for that, which must be followed to the letter. Keeping that in mind, along with your interest in trying natural remedies, I'd like to suggest the following tips, which I commonly recommend for post-op constipation: take regular walks; drink enough water so that your urine is clear or pale yellow; start your day with a cup of hot peppermint tea, or a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon; make sure your diet includes around 25-35 grams of fibre per day from a wide variety of low-FODMAPs fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; add ground flaxseeds to cereal and smoothies; fill up on magnesium from dark chocolate, leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, and almonds. One more top tip to promote regularity is to squat on the throne after every meal, with your feet elevated on a small footstool, which works by stimulating the gastro-colic reflex, in which the stomach tells the brain that it's full, then the brain tells the colon to empty its contents, to make room for the new stuff coming in, and the squat position properly aligns the rectum so the poop can pass through more smoothly; if you do this consistently, then you may find that your bowel habits become more regular, as your colon comes to regard meal time as go time. Wishing you all the best for a successful surgery, and for getting back to normal pooping soon!

Hi KarenLBar to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

You may wish to talk to your IBS doctor to see what he or she would recommend. It will also be important to know what to do post surgery.
