Upcoming hysterectomy 3/23: COVID restrictions in hospital?

Hi - I am having my urerus, cervix and ovaries removed due to complex hyperplasia with atypia. I have been reading a lot about what to expect and felt pretty relaxed.

Yesterday I received a call from the hospital letting me know that while my husband can come in with me pre-op, he will have to leave when they take me back for surgery and then will only return when I am discharged.

People who have done this without a support person, what will they do with your suitcase? I will be staying overnight. Is there someone to help me do things like plug in my phone, get out my hand lotion, lozenges etc? Any tips?

I am a planner and kind of feel adrift with the change in situation. Thanks for your help!*

Re: COVID restrictions in hospital?

I was alone, first you don’t need a suitcase, they put my small bag of essentials away and brought it back when I was in my room.

Had another surgery in January and same happened

Also, you should be mobile after surgery, never had an issue plugging the phone myself, etc.
The nurses will more than likely have you walk around a few hours post surgery

Hi Sarahcpco2020 to HysterSisters!

I am so glad you found this site.

I know it will be hard to not have your DH with you. But, you truly will not need much. I wore the same clothes to the hospital that I left in: sweats and a comfy loose t-shirt. All toiletries were provided, and for my hospital stay itself (3 1/2 days) they had me wear one of their gowns with rubber soled socks.

You will definitely not need a suitcase - maybe just a small gym bag at most. Make sure to bring your cell phone and charger. Any reading material - keep it light, as you will not be able to concentrate. Here are some other ideas:
What to Take to the Hospital for Hysterectomy.

Given the circumstances, they will put your gym bag in a safe place for your surgery, and will then give it to you in your room. Upon leaving, they will put you in a wheel chair with your gym bag on your lap. It will be a bit lonely, but I can understand their restrictions.

Thanks for the well wishes and support. I am packing light with just the essentials and heading to bed as I have to be up early. Talk to you soon!

I am sorry they will not let your husband be there with you, but know we will all be there with you in spirit! The nurses are wonderful, and do not hesitate asking them for anything. Really, it will be nice in a way not to have visitors as you will be tired and want to sleep. I am one who hates asking for anything, but I learned quickly to lean on those nurses. That is what they are there for after all. You will do great tomorrow and don't hesitate to reach out on the forums while you recover. Best wishes to you for a quick recovery!
