Pumeza's Vaginal Hysterectomy Story

Vaginal Hysterectomy
Age at Surgery 34
Location: South Africa

Hi ladies.

I can't believe that today I hit the 6months mark after my procedure. Hysterectomy was actually a second procedure after AP Repair I had on the 29th September 2019 failed. I had a a bladder prolapse that troubled me starting from March last year. Finally went for a procedure on the 29th of September. I stayed for the whole week in hospital.

After a a month or so, I realized that I had another prolapse and it was confirmed that it's the uterus. On the 12th of February I ha Laproscopic Sacrocolpopexy and vaginal Hysterectomy.

I had the general anesthesia. My procedure lasted for long 6 hours in theatre. I wenth home on the fourth day. Hospital stay was just fine, supportive staff, I also made a friend from one of the patients.

My doctor told me that I'll keep the catheter fo 2 weeks because my bladder got ruptured during the procedure.

I was worried about life after Hysterectomy, as young as I am having gone through that was a biggest challenge on its own. My recovery was difficult due to the catheter I was carrying, sometimes it would be too full at night, that caused a lot of pain. I was worried about my sexual life, not seeing my periods again, being incomplete without my uterus made me feel like ill be less of a woman.

On my review, the catheter was removed and my doctor was happy with my healing progress. My doctor released me to go back to my normal routine after 8 weeks but I was still scared. Because I couldn't go for a checkup due to COVID-19 Lockdown.

I'm glad I went for the procedure because since I've done it, I haven't experienced any prolapse again. Just that I've put on too much weight.

It's not an easy decision to make. But if its life threatening, go for it. Surround yourself with people who support you. Remember that being without a uterus doesn't make you less of a woman. Have that one person you share your journey and fears with. Pray about your procedure before you go for it.
