Upcoming hysterectomy 11/20 - Covid: Elective Surgery Concern

I know I am being completely selfish, but I'm t-minus 6 days until TAH (keep ovaries) but my states Covid numbers continue to rise and lots of talk about hospitals shutting down elective surgeries. It's been difficult getting to this point, as I'm sure many of you can relate, and I just needed a safe space to express my frustrations. I understand I can only control the controllables, but - ugh - between the iron infusions, mental preparation, medical visits, etc. I hope everything stays on course. The thought of potentially starting over in some respects is taking a toll on the stress level

Re: Covid: Elective Surgery Concern

Hi Kelly 11.20.20

Rest assured, this is a safe place to vent your frustrations, concerns, emotions, anxieties, and anything else you are feeling. The road to a hysterectomy can be a difficult journey indeed, and then to have it potentially upended by something so far out of your control is a difficult pill to swallow. Yes, you can only control the controllables - but that is the logical side talking. The emotional side just wants to or , and that is okay. This would be quite upsetting, and it is okay to express this.

Just know that you truly are not alone on this journey. We will be by your side throughout this process.

Upcoming hysterectomy 11/20 - Covid: Elective Surgery Concern

I’ve been worrying about Covid affecting my surgery, too. New mandates were announced, but thankfully surgeries are still able to happen. I have to have another surgery a month after this one, so I’ll be worried about being able to have that one, too. Hope you get to have yours!! The emotional lead up is so much; it’d be awful to go through it again.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 11/20 - Covid: Elective Surgery Concern

My sympathies!!

I had my hysterectomy last summer and the first thing I thought of when the pandemic started and hospitals began postponing 'elective surgeries' was....what is elective? I mean is it elective to say a surgery will finally eliminate years of pain and suffering? Is it elective to remove a risk of cancer?

I hope you are able to proceed with your treatment and recover well!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 11/20 - Covid: Elective Surgery Concern

Hi Kelly! Just wanted to say that you have all of my empathy. This was a constant source of anxiety to me for months in the spring and summer. My surgery (scheduled for the spring) got postponed for several months just a few days after they did my pre-op appointment and told me everything was proceeding as scheduled. It was a huge blow. If I have any encouragement for you, it's that they ended up going through with it in the summer, when case numbers were even higher than they had been in the spring when they cancelled it. It just took a while initially for hospital systems to figure out how to proceed safely and gather enough PPE, and once mine did all of that they have said they will continue with elective procedures despite rising COVID cases. I hope that this will be the case for you as well. It is hard not to be worried and scared, though--I know! Your feelings are valid. <3
