Hysterectomy cancelled due to COVID (12/4) UPDATED: rescheduled 3/22

I should’ve been having surgery tomorrow. Due to the rising cases in my area, my surgery was cancelled today with no reschedule date. I know this is out of my and the hospital’s control but I can’t help but feel upset. Trying to tell myself that “things happen for a reason”.

Re: Cancelled due to Covid

Yes, unfortunately this will be the case for many people as States re introduce more measures, similar to the ones earlier. My State has just re introduced canceling elective surgeries today today.

And the only reason it happens is because many people are not taking this virus seriously

Hysterectomy cancelled due to COVID (12/4) UPDATED: rescheduled 3/22

It's understandable you are upset especially after preparing yourself mentally for the surgery.I had my surgery cancelled in September but it went ahead 6 weeks ago. I believe things always work out for the best. The decision was made for your health and benefit, it's really annoying that so many are not protecting others in their behaviour.

Hysterectomy cancelled due to COVID (12/4) UPDATED: rescheduled 3/22

GPMS and Serendipity_2,

That’s exactly how I’m feeling. Frustrated that because of other people’s actions, my health plan is impacted. All the work I’ve done leading up to the day before surgery just to be postponed. Who knows how long I’ll be delayed now but I am trying to stay hopeful. <3
At least I have all the frozen meals I prepared so I won’t have to make dinner for a while.

Re: Cancelled due to COVID

Bless you, I do sympathise. My initial appointments at the beginning of the year got cancelled from March to July and then my first scheduled op for Sept got postponed to Nov.

It’s disappointing as you prepare so many things and prepare yourself mentally too.

Just wanted to send you a virtual hug, hope you get a new date soon when it’s safe for you to be in hospital.

Re: Cancelled due to COVID

Hi LiatC

I am sorry your surgery was cancelled and I know it is so frustrating to have this happen . You did everything correctly, had your house prepared, and your mind set. But because people will not social distance, wear masks or take other precautions, your own situation has gone off the rails. I fear we will see many other sisters have their own surgery cancelled due to COVID.

Do the best you can and

Hopefully your surgery will be rescheduled sooner rather than later.

Re: Cancelled due to COVID

I totally understand and sympathize. My surgery was also postponed due to rising Covid cases and no beds available in the hospital (So CA). I had done all my pre-op and registration. I had my house clean and meals in the freezer; my husband had taken the time off to be at home with me. They literally cancelled it at 3:30 in the afternoon the day before my surgery. And it doesn't look like it will be rescheduled any time soon. It's soooo frustrating to get mentally prepared and then poof, no more.

I agree with GPMS about people not taking this virus seriously. My province is currently in a full lockdown as case counts continue to soar to record levels, and yet an informal poll has shown that many people have defied public health directives not to gather with anyone outside their households over the holidays, and several local politicians have been caught taking international vacations in direct defiance of orders to avoid unnecessary travel; as a result, our hospitals are full beyond capacity, and their ability to handle non-COVID cases is being impacted. Hopefully, once these people see the results of their actions, and once the vaccine rollout kicks into high gear, the situation will improve to the point where you can have your surgery rescheduled. Here's hoping that this will all be behind us soon, so you can move forward with your surgery and recovery!

That's so similar to what happened to me in November! I had my surgery scheduled and it got canceled due to the doctor's family emergency around 3ish and I'm just glad I didn't start the magnesium citrate or I really would have been mad. I was hoping to get a reschedule before the end of 2020 but I was told that they stopped doing major surgeries due to covid. So now I'm waiting and wondering which year I'll finally get to have surgery? 2021? 2022??

I’m in a similar situation. Went for pre-op on 30th October, then my surgeon called me to say she wanted to move me to someone else more specialised. I had a call with the new surgeon on 8th December and still hoped it would be in December... but now with the rising cases in the UK, they can’t get theatre space so I have no idea when it will be. I’d got meals prepared, done all of my Christmas presents, sorted out all my cover at work.. so frustrating when you’ve geared yourself up for it!
It’ll happen at some point.
