Hysterectomy recovery challenge due to covid

New here, thanks for having me! I had my surgery on 11/19. In a perfect storm of circumstances, that was two weeks before we closed on the sale of our house. At my first post op appt, I found out I was allergic to the dermabond adhesive and it was causing some unpleasant side effects. AND two weeks after surgery I got covid. So my recovery has been a little slow. Currently, with my covid cough, I'm still feeling some pain in the lower left area of my abdomen. I'm also finding that I still cannot lay on that side. My surgeon told me she works from the left side, so that side would be more sore, but I'm still not sure if I'm feeling a "normal" amount of residual pain.

Re: Hysterectomy recovery challenge due to covid

and

Oh my... you've really been thrown some curve balls outside of surgery! Glad to read that your experience with COVID was / is not critical and that you seem to be getting past it.

You're around 4 weeks post-op, and although you're not fresh out of surgery, it's still in the middle of recovery. Even with a textbook recovery, many of us experience soreness and discomfort into 6 or 8 weeks, and often will get the telltale signs of doing more than our bodies are ready to handle for several months afterwards. With surgery billed as "minimally invasive" (vaginal or robotic / laparoscopic hysterectomies) we don't have the external evidence of what when on INside, but we all had 4-5 sets of ligaments and numerous blood vessels cut as well as organs removed. All those tissues were stitched or cauterized, and it takes time to heal - beyond the 2-3 weeks most of us think!

Since you've just joined us, you might find these resources helpful in meeting you where you are in the recovery process:I'd also like to invite you to connect with your Recovery Thread for women who had surgery the same week as you at Recovery Progress Reports for Nov 16-22. Recovery Threads are wonderful for getting support, comparing notes, encouraging others, and keeping one another company.
