Deep breathing painful (3 days post hysterectomy)

I had a laparoscopic vaginal hysterectomy on 6/2. Today, it physically hurts for me to take a deep breath. I'm not short of breath, my oxygen level is fine (I have a pulse oximeter to check), and it doesn't hurt to breathe normally. But yawning, coughing, and other deep breaths are painful. It wasn't like this before today. Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes. Mine was from the soreness of the surgery itself. It lasted a few days.

Please contact your doctor. What you are describing could be a sign of a pulmonary embolism, and if that is the case you will need immediate attention.

Deep breathing painful (3 days post hysterectomy)

I get chondritis, not from surgery but i have always had it. Sounds like what you might be experiencing its just inflammation of the rib cage causes by trauma or sometimes theres just no cause. Or it could be you hurt from the breathing tube.

Being intubated can contribute to that. I didn't find it painful as much as I couldn't get a good lung full of air. With my most recent surgery, I had a spirometer to practice deeper breathing.

I found more issues with my sinuses being all stopped up!

you should call your dr and let him decide if you need to go to the ER.

Re: Deep breathing painful (3 days post hysterectomy)

Hey, i also had my procedure on 6/2 and I wake up short of breath and a little panicked. It’s hard to discern anxiety from something else, so I would be reticent to write it off as nothing. I wouldn’t freak out either- but with how recent your surgery was I would just contact your doctor or on call nurse and watch for those pulmonary embolism signs. Communication is important and be vigilant to watch your self, but don’t panic yet. However, I would definitely reach out to a health professional in regards to this. I find deep breathing helpful for the anxiety I get when i wake up and my body kind of remembers what happened and I get a little anxious. If it hurts to take a deep breath, I would contact my doctor. Best of luck and hang in there!

Re: Deep breathing painful (3 days post hysterectomy)

The pain has eased with pain meds and I'm doing some deep breathing exercises when I can, but I will get another message out to my doctor just to be safe. I wrote them yesterday about shoulder pain, and they had warned me that chest and shoulder pain would be due to the CO2 gas, and that the pain would shift as the gas worked its way around.

I've never been short of breath through all of it, which has been a good sign.

That sounds good. I hope you continue to have some relief . I find myself so completely exhausted here on day 3, it’s intense. But binge watching tv and frequent naps are doing the trick!
