Megace vs. natural progesterone

Dear sisters,

It's so good to be back - have a new computer. My question: I took myself off of Megace 40mg due to the bad side effects - mostly swinging moods - and wondered if anyone else was using natural progesterone cream to keep the endometrial ca cells at bay. I feel better with the cream, don't know if it's considered effective or not.

Had surgery 6/25/01, followed by six weeks radiation and 36 hrs. internal radiation, finished 9/6/01.

I'm doing very well, with one exception. I have fibromyalgia, and strangely it didn't bother me at all during treatment, but kicked in BIG time one year (almost to the day) after treatment.

Would love to hear from someone with info or similar situation. Hugs and prayers to all.

Megace vs. natural progesterone

Do ask your doctor right away if you haven't about taking the bio-identical progesterone. Progesterone can convert into other hormones, including estrogen. It's a small effect so some doctors do ok it, but it is not the same as a progestin, particularly Megace. The great benefit (and perhaps cause of the side effects) of progestins is that they do not convert to anything else in your body. My understanding also is that Megace in particular is formulated to prevent the regrowth of endometrial tissue, not especially help with menopausal symptoms.

This is just my understanding, but I do think you should ask right away since it's not a straight substitution (like, for instance, substituting Estrace for Premarin).

Hope s/he says you can take it anyway.
