Ovarian Cancer info??

Hi everybody,

The good news is: I had my LAVH in Oct. and everything is just fine there.

The bad news is: I just found out that my aunt has ovarian cancer, (probably stage 4). I know that there are some OvCa survivors here, but at stage 4, is there much hope at all?

I believe they found out through a fluid test of some sort that it has spread to other organs, she was supposed to go to a cancer center today, to have more testing done etc.

Right now, I'd like to be able to give her some hope, if that's possible. Thank you for any help you can provide.

OvCA Resources

I'll give you some good internet sites to look at.
Johns Hopkins: ovariancancer.jhmi.edu/home/cfm
Mayo Clinic: www.mayoclinic click on Diseases and conditions and then "o"
We MD: webmd.com click on "condition centers"

Patsy Ramsey (yes, THE Patsy Ramsey) had stage 4 and was 8 years without disease--just had a recurrence this year and undrewent treatment again. Stage 4 is not hopeless at all.

Ovarian Cancer info??

Hi cat..
I was at stage 3 when then found my ovarian cancer, had a total hysterectomy, underwent chemo and am doing great. According to my oncologist there is always hope for everyone and that your personal outlook on life has alot to do with successful recovery. I hope all works out well and keep us posted.

Thanks Ladies!!

I knew I could count on you! It sounds now like my aunt's cancer might not be as far advanced as they first thought.

As of yesterday, they believe the cancer is confined to the ovaries and stomach lining. Would that then be considered stage 3?
I had heard earlier that it may have gone to her lungs, which didn't sound good at all.

Mary, (my aunt), is meeting with the surgeon today, and will have surgery soon.

The thing that makes me a little nervous is; Mary had a hysterectomy years ago, but decided to keep her ovaries.
I just had mine (for cervical CIS) in October, and made the same decision. I still don't regret it, I really wanted to keep them as long as they looked healthy at the time.

I guess, I feel a little better knowing that at age 44, my ovaries have been checked out, and are fine. They did take a small cyst off of one at the time, and it was non cancerous.

It's really great to hear that you ladies are doing so well, and I can pass along a message of hope to my wonderful aunt who's done so much for others.

It's been a very rough year for my family. I had open heart surgery in May,and Mary sat with my husband during my surgery. Then when I had my hyster in Oct. She was the first visitor I saw on the way to my room. My sister, Patty has stage 4 breast cancer and had a brain tumor removed in July. Our family put on a benefit for her a couple of weeks ago and Mary helped out greatly with that. The benefit was very successful, and now Patty has the money for cancer treatments, but sadly, less than a week later Mary was diagonsed with ovarian cancer.

I'm really hoping and praying for a better year in 2003!

I am so sorry to hear about your aunt

I wouldn't get too obsessed with stage 3 vs 4 - as Margaret said there are plenty of long term survivors out there - although no mistake, this is one serious disease. In addition to the spread, other factors that influence outcome are how well the doc can get what cancer s/he sees out (what is called "optimal reduction" and be sure she sees a gyn-onc) and what type of cancer.
