Super irritable 6 weeks post total hysterectomy (kept ovaries) - time to ask for HRT?

Hi Sisters,

Thanks for all the support on this forum.! Healing is slow, but better every day. They took everything except my two ovaries and I'm 44, with no signs of menopause prior to surgery.
Now that my body is starting to feel semi-normal, I'm noticing that I've been aggravated and *****y for a few weeks. Obviously, the surgery was no fun and the recovery long and frustrating but this feels like major PMS for a few hours each day. I'm assuming my hormones are still a bit out of whack, so I'm wondering what I might be able to do.
Would it be smart to ask to try HRT? Should I wait? How do I keep from unleashing fury on those around me? Normally, I'm quite pleasant : )
I'm also still quite fatigued, so I usually nap before all hell breaks loose, but hoping to see my sunnier disposition return soon.
Any advice?

Re: Super irritable 6weeks post TLH- time to ask for HRT?

If you kept your ovaries, most doctors wait a few months before testing, recommending HRT. As you mentioned, hormones are tested post hysterectomy for many who have kept their ovaries.

Also, fatigue can contribute to being irritable

Re: Super irritable 6weeks post TLH- time to ask for HRT?

It took somewhere between 12-16 weeks for my ovaries to be full-throttle again. HRT is always a possibility, but whether OTC supplements like Estroven, Sources of Plant Estrogens or HRT, they're not going to work in a few days - it's usually over several weeks. Estroven, for example, directs women to take daily for 60 days; doctors usually wait several weeks before adjusting any HRT, too. For right now, I think documenting your symptoms would be most beneficial (here's a good guide on what to note). If your irritability doesn't improve, you'll have a record of how often Enyo surfaces.

Meanwhile, make time for getting outdoors if it's not too hot and miserable where you are - sunshine can lift the spirits. Find some light or uplifting reading (think "Chicken Soup for the Soul"), keep a gratitude journal and write down your blessings, or explore your creative side. GPMS is right about the fatigue contributing, so obey any impulse to nap or get to bed early.

My vegan diet includes regular servings of plant estrogens from organic soy milk, tofu, and edamame, which I always recommend to sisters dealing with post-op hormonal imbalances. Fermented soy products like tempeh or miso can also help with your emotional balance by supporting the 90% of serotonin production that takes place in your intestinal tract, and depends on the friendly bacteria living in there, which may have been affected by antibiotics used in the surgery; other good sources of probiotics include yogurt, kefir, kombucha, unpasteurized sauerkraut, and a good-quality supplement. Other dietary additions that can help with emotional balance include a B complex supplement, Vitamin D - I'm in Canada, so even at this time of year, I don't get enough from sun exposure - and Omega 3 fats from fatty fish, walnuts, flaxseeds - another source of plant estrogens - and chia seeds. Sending you my warmest hugs, and best wishes for continued health and healing!

I am confident you are quite pleasant even now.
As one who told a bank manager "you are as useless as tits on a bull" and then did my banking with a teller ONLY to return to the bank mgr and more loudly tell him that he was as useless as tits on a bull, I empathize with your irritability.

If you have suffered with irritability intermittently for a week, get in for an appt. Sister, life is to be enjoyed. Perhaps doc will prescribe temporary HRT Or temporary mood lifter. As Cybill Shepherd and that hair color company declared - You're worth it.

My best to you.
