"Dried" Ovaries Question

My best friend had cancer of the cervix when she was 28. That was 14 years ago. She had a hysterectomy but kept ovaries. After a round of radiation, her doctor told her that she needed to be on HRT because the radiation "dried" her ovaries and they were no longer functioning. Can my friend still get ovarian cancer? She has always been uncomfortable with ovaries that are non-functioning. She has said many times she wish she had them removed when she first had the surgery. Can ovaries that are non-functioning become cancerous?

"Dried" Ovaries Question

Unfortunately ovarian cancer is the sly one. Even having ovaries removed does not completely take away the risk of ovarian cancer. Ovarian cells are shed throughout the abdomen when we are still just a fetus. These old shed off cells have been known to make their presence felt, years after the ovaries have been removed. It is a type of cancer called primary peritoneal, but it is identical to ovarian cancer and treated the same way.
Your friends chance of developing ovarian cancer is lessened with her ovaries not functioning. It is known that not ovulating cuts the risks of ovarian cancer. Therefore, her risk is less, but not completely gone.
Women with functioning ovaries, who have a close relative with ovca, should be on birth control pills to stop ovulation.
Hope this info helps.
