Ca125 Matters To Consider

As my clinic moves out of the hospital across the street to newer/bigger facilities, I discovered they are changing the laboratory that will do my CA125. It used to be the hospital lab, but now it will be sent to Quest in Chicago. I did some internet work and e-mailing and heard back from my hospital lab where the CA125 has been done all along. First, any change in lab can result in different readings for the CA125. Also, there are different ways to do the test. I was able to find out that the new lab will use microparticle enzyme immunoassay whereas the hospital lab uses a totally different way (I didn't write the name down but I believe it's photo something) and the new lab will produce different CA125 readings. So, for at least the first couple of times, I am going to have my Dr. refer me to the old lab (I'll have to self-pay but got the cost) so that I will have their CA125 to compare to the new lab until we can see how their readings do differ. For instance, my old 7.9 could possibly be say 14 or 15 at the new lab. Just passing this on for consideration.

Ca125 Matters To Consider

Thanks for the heads up. I usually get my CA125 drawn at my local Hem/Oncologist. They send the specimen to Mayo Clinic. Next month, I have a CA125 scheduled at my gyne/onc office. They do the testing there (UW Hosp& Clinic). I will be interested to see what the different tests show.

Interesting information to research. Thanks.

I understand not wanting to change the labs that test our ca 125's. Too many variances.
However, perhaps you could have each lab do a test on the same day. That way you could compare your results from a level playing field so to speak. If the results are equal, you'd feel freer going with the new lab.
Hoping for great results.

Hi Karenann

This is what I plan to do--finish chemo and go over to the lab (two blocks connected by skywalk) for a CA125 there. Then we can do a comparison. I'm thinking at least twice until we see how they relate. There's always something to be aware of!
