ask doc before quitting smoking before surgery

I just noticed this came up on a number of threads.

A lot of women over the years were warned NOT to quit just before surgery by their doctors. If you can, ask the surgeon or better yet call the anesthesiologist or anesthesiology department and ask what they think. They are the people whose responsibility is to get you through the surgery ok so they're experts on how it works. Apparently quitting increases the mucus in your lungs and so breathing is more difficult while that clears out. Since pneumonia and clearing your lungs is such a concern, it's better to not complicate the problem.

So apparently it 's better to quit quite a while before or after the surgery but not right before. So check with your doctor about your particular situation.

Ask your DR, not your friend, even though she's a nurse. She's not the one who will be performing the surgery. Your DR is the one who needs to advise on things that may affect your surgery.

Best wishes!

pneumonia

I developed pneumonia the day after my surgery this past Saturday. I am a smoker and did not consider quitting prior to this surgery. I ended up back in the hospital yesterday as the pneumonia worsened to both my lungs along with difficult breathing. Today, I am suffering from this pneumonia, my severe constipation and the cramps from not making a bowel movement. I just want to say to you ladies, if you smoke, PLEASE consider stopping at least 2 or 3 months prior to your surgery. You really don't need to deal with pneumonia on top of everything else. I hate to have any of you go through this. God Bless..

Just my experience........

I was asked not to smoke at least 24 hours prior to surgery. I used the patch and even wore it into the O.R. They did check my blood pressure (which is usually low) and they had no problems with the patch based on my blood pressure.
