Returning Cancer

Hi all!
Just a question. Has anyone ever had a cervical cancer went through with a hysterectomy and had the cancer return in a different area of the pelvis such as the vagina? I was just thinking about this and worrying. Please tell me your stories so that I can get some info on this.
Also, just so that all of you know I had a hysterectomy in November leaving my ovaries. All of the cervix was taken, I was told that I had cervical cancer and decided to go ahead and try to take care of all of it.
Thanks for the input!

Betty

Returning Cancer

Hi Betty,

I'm not aware of anyone presently on this board that had a recurrence on the vaginal wall after their hyst. I've been visiting Hystersisters for 2 years and remember one lady who had the problem and I think there was a incident of "tearing" during her surgery which may have been a factor.

Of course we all worry about it and have to be closely followed for 5 yrs or so. From everything I've read it is very rare. I can't tell you not to worry but I can tell you that in my case I get a little bit less tense with each follow up. I just passed 2 yrs and now go every 6 months.

Don't really know about cervical cancer

But I will leave it up to the women here who've had it. You'll be followed carefully and look at what EM said--she's now up to 6 months! You'll be there and at 5 years before you know it--free!

Returning Cancer

Hi Betty,
Sorry to say, but I have had it happen. In fact, I just had a partial vaginectomy because of a recurrance on the vaginal wall. Mine showed up about 9 months after my hyster.
The path report from my hyster showed very close margins and said that it needed to be watched closely, which we did. That is why it is so important to have the 3 month paps.
Don't freak out about this. It is very, very rare that it happens, but it can. I can only think of one other person who has had this happen and she is doing fine now without more surgery (I'm jealous).
If you are really stressing about this, talk to your doctor and I'm sure he can give you the percentages on this.
Take care.
