had pre-op today

I have my hysterectomy this Thursday. I had a laser cone biopsy about a month ago. The nurse had told me that the results were no worse than the punch biopsies had already confirmed (which was CIS).

The doctor told me today (and showed me the path report) that it came back CIS for both the ectocervix and the endocervix. But he said that what worries him is that there were NO clear margins on the sample taken.

I am not sure exactly what that means. But he did not indicate that it was invasive. I am just unsure what to think at this point. He said that we are going ahead as planned with the hyst., and then the pathology will be done on everything removed.

Anyway, I guess I just needed to "vent". I have had a TERRIBLE time that past couple weeks. I have not had time to relax at all. My best friend was in the hospital, and I was taking care of her when she came home. Then, my husband's cousin just walked out on his wife and kids to go live with his girlfriend. So his wife and kids have been with me all this time. I am trying to pick up the pieces of his MESS!! And, everytime I start to get the poor souls who have been abandoned somewhat calmed down, something else happens to send them back into tears and screaming rages. And trying to deal with my own mess. And then hearing the news of the "no clear margins" just really sent me back. I did not even think to ask for more clarification of this.
It may sound terrible of me, and it may make me sound weak, but I cannot wait to go the castle and be SEDATED!!

Sorry, I know this is long, and parts of it are off topic, but I am really about at my breaking point, and I did not know where else to go to let it all out. Thanks ladies!

Hi Amy,

I'm sorry you've had such a tough couple of weeks. You're welcome to come here to vent as much as you need to.

The "margins" are the edges of the tissue that has been removed. Clear margins indicate that there are normal cells around the abnormal cells and could be an indication that all the cancer has been removed with the LEEP or Cone. Sometimes the path report after the hyst shows no cancer....indicating that it was all removed during the LEEP. In my case, I had clear margins after my Cone but my next pap was abnormal. Apparently your specimen showed abnormal cells to the edges of the specimen.

You might want to call your dr tomorrow and ask him the questions you didn't ask him today. He's probably quite used to his patients calling because they went home and started thinking about all the "what if's". My dr told me it happens all the time.

Wishing you the best of luck on Thursday.

CIS with unclear margins means that there was pre-cancer (Stage 0 cancer) and they probably did not get it all. Ask the doctor what he/she meant by invasive. Was it that the precancer has invaded your cervix or is he/she talking about cancer. I had my hysterectomy a year ago because they found AIS with unclear margins. A is for adeno which is a more aggressive cell. It turned out that I had a tiny 1mm spot of cancer but it was all taken care of with the hyster. If you are not seeing a gyn/oncologist I would go to one. I made the mistake of not doing that. Good Luck. Don't be afraid to call and ask questions.

s Amy

I will certainly be wishing you all the best on Thursday.
It is never too late to call your doc with further questions.
Or to consult with a gyn oncologist about your concerns.
