period or no period?

This may sound like a silly question, but I've heard from some people that your menstrual cycle ends after a hyst, and from others that it doesn't. What's the truth? I'm going to the DR tomorrow to talk about having a hyst and I want to ask all the right questions, but I don't want to appear to be an idiot either.

Well,

If the doc leaves your ovaries in, you will still get a hormonal cycle, if your ovaries work (sometimes they don't function well after a hyst), but no bleeding! On the down side, you may still have PMS (if you do now) on the plus side, you will keep your natural hormones.

Once in a while, if the cervix is left in, and the ovaries, women may have slight monthly bleeding, or so I have heard from others on these boards.

There's no question to silly to ask your doctor so check with him/her!

Marie, Dorrie said it all so well.You ask that doctor every question you can think of. If possible, take a friend with you to be in the room, to listen and take notes. And...you don't have to agree to anything during your appointment. Always a good idea to come home and think about things. Ask more question and always go to a second doctor for another opinion before agreeing to major surgery.

Thank you for your encouragement. Actually, I'm taking my DH with me so that he can know exactly what goes on with a hyst. He's a wonderful man and would do anything for me, but I don't believe he realizes the extent of recovery with a hyst, so I believe this will be just as good for him as it is for me. I have a list of questions to ask, and it just keeps growing, but most of my questions have been answered by communicating with you all. Thanks so much for the comfort and the encouragement.
