What to do about LOST libido...

Sisters,

I have been off of HRT for 5 months. Partly due to on-going problems with Endo. My moods are great, and I'm showing very few menopausal symptoms, except for night sweats!

I'm wondering if any of you have some info on what I can do to increase my libido. My dh is a sweetie, but I think he is taking this pretty hard. Besides not having the urge, it hurts to make love, even with a good lubricant.

My docs want me to stay away from any sort of estrogen cream until all of the tests have been done. But I wanted to ask you for any tips that have helped you....

Oh...and where has my mind gone?! I have almost no memory left. Is this also part of being off of HRT?

Thanks in Advance, S

Jude

What to do about LOST libido...

Hi Jude There are some things you can try... if you have to stay away from hormones of any kind you could try damiana leaf (from the health food store). I tried it before I started using testosterone, and it worked for me a little bit - no miracles though. I got the idea to try it from (((trish's))) pull down on libido: http://www.hormonejungle.com/libido.php

Another thing you could consider is asking your DR about trying testosterone. It's not for everyone... but it is the 'hormone of desire'. It's done wonders for me. Many DRs will OK its use even for ladies who can't use estrogen, but one thing to watch out for with testosterone is that if conditions favor it, your body can make estrogen from it. So, if you tried it, you'd want to keep an eye on your estrogen level to make sure that's not happening to you. Also it's not a good option for ladies with bad lipid profiles... it can tend to raise your LDL and lower your HDL. But it does restore energy and libido quite nicely for a lot of us, and has also helped me with vaginal dryness... also makes my kegels much stronger, which has got to be a good thing, right? There are several threads going about it right now over in the if you'd like to take a look.

Hope this helps!
s,
-Linda

What to do about LOST libido...

Hi Jude!
I don't take oral HRT, but do have a prescription for estrogen cream. Unfortunately, with I often forget to use it. I have found the long acting lubricants like replens, used a few hours before works better than using a lubricant during.

Some ladies have also used vitamin e capsules - just placed them in their vagina - I haven't tried it but a few sisters swear by it.

On the libido - I find I must just sort of force the issue and I need music, wine, a good dinner etc. Otherwise, it just doesn't work for me anymore.

Thanks ((((Sisters))))

I can always count on all of you

((((Linda))))) Thanks for the tips (again LOL!) I'll check out the health food store. Once I am able to apply something, I will probably go the testosterone route. I may stay off estrogen all together...depending on what these test results bring. I tried taking testosterone orally approx 1 year ago. I had really strange side effects from it...heart racing, red face, felt like someone wrapped their hands around my neck and was strangling me. It was all very strange. I don't think I was able to stand it for more then a week or two. But then again, I was taking estrogen and progesterone then...so perhaps I would have a different reaction now? I think the cream is what I want though. xoxo

((((Sis)))) No, I haven't tried black cohosh yet. Does it have any estrogen like properties that you are aware of? This Endo makes me so paranoid! If not, perhaps I will check this out. I miss snuggling with dh at night. I do drink ALOT of water. DH bought me one of those home water cooler things for my b-day last year, as we couldn't keep up with buying those filters for the jug! Is there such a thing as drinking too much water? I probably drink between 8 & 10 16 oz glasses a day...sometimes more. Sorry to hear about your libido too. Perhaps someday they'll have something safe for us to try. xoxo

((((Dorrie)))) It is so good to 'see' you again my dear. I hope life is treating you well these days. Thanks for the tips. I'm going to print out this thread...and next time we're out doing some shopping...I plan on picking up some of these products.

You gals are the best. Thanks again my dear sisters...S

What to do about LOST libido...

Jude...

I am not aware of any estrogen properties with black cohosh..

I also think I am going to talk more about the cream[testosterone]......

I am reading about it anf hearing it helped so many women........

My DR. said no but I am going to give it another try....And maybe speak to my family DR. and see what she thinks.....

I too get so sad over this......I miss what once was... And if that cream can give just a little back I would be so happy

Jude don't forget the cool cloths around your neck...For the flashes

Me too...

I hope that my docs agree to let me try it soon. And ((((Sis)))) I hope your docs let you give it a whirl.

I know that I was using a progesterone cream before the hyst., and it really helped me in that department

Sis, if you try it be sure to post your experiences. I don't post much here, but I read here almost everyday.

Sending cool S to my sisters in the Oasis...

testosterone

On the advice of so many of the women here at hystersisters, I requested a compounded testosterone cream from my doctor. I was happy to find out that he was more than willing. His first impulse is typically to put a woman on Estratest (which has both estrogen and testosterone), but with my history of endo recurring after the TAH-BSO, that wasn't an option. I wouldn't have chosen that route anyhow, because one can't control the two hormones separately. I'm very happy to have started this, though it's only been a week. I have already noticed a little bit of difference, though I hope it just gets better.

I have a question for those of you who have been on the compounded cream for a while. My mom is freaked out that I'm using testosterone because she thinks my voice pitch will get lower and I'll grow chest hair. (She forgets sometimes that I had testosterone before the surgery and I should have some now!) She believes these side-effects are irreversible and maybe not worth the risk. (I think it's worth the risk or I wouldn't be using the cream!) Have any of you ladies using the compounded cream noticed these things? From what I've read, it seems the systemic kind (the pill form) is more likely to cause these side-effects.

Thanks for the time you all take reading and answering so many of the questions we have and for making this a supportive place to learn and be refreshed.
