Detrol LA question

For those of you who have taken Detrol LA for bladder spasms, how long did you have to take it?

I have looked elsewhere for typical legnth of treatment type of info and have not been able to find any clear answers. The Detrol LA website seems to lean toward taking the medicine forever. So, I thought I'd poll the sisters.

Have appt with on the 10th to discuss this issue and I'd like to have some idea of what I can expect. I am having the typical dry mouth symptom, but also my contacts are drying out much more than usual. I hate to wear my glasses and find this aggravating - but of course not as bad as being in the bathroom every 30 minutes!

Thanks to anyone for feedback!

tried it for a while

Hi,
My urologist had me try it partly because of urgency/frequency, but mainly my problem is stress/mixed incontinence. It did not help the incontinence at all and I didn't like the side effects either. I am having a bladder sling on Feb. 26 for the problems with incontinence. I didn't know it was also for spasms. And, you're right, it seems like a long-term med. I'll be curious what your doctor says.

Detrol LA question

I was having a hard time with bladder spasms post op and actually asked for Detrol LA. I still have some left as I was able to stop after a while. I took it everyday for a week or so and then just started taking it when it felt like my bladder was going to spaz again. I don't take it at all now, but some take it everyday. Always. You should follow your doctors orders and if you want to try and go without it then just tell him and see what he thinks about using it PRN or as needed.

Thanks!

Thanks for the responses. I developed bladder spasms with no infection and no incontinence (stress or otherwise).

I was busy caring for my sick child yesterday and trying to work from home and completely forgot to take the Detrol LA. Did not seem to bother me. Of course, I took it this morning and will continue to take it until "ordered" otherwise.

Hopefully, I can at least back down to the half dose (2mg instead of 4mg) or perhaps stop taking it all together. Just have to wait and see what my doctor says. My appt is Monday and I am crossing my fingers....just a few more days of dry mouth/contacts.

bladder spasms...

Michelle,
I, too, have had a battle with bladder spasms since my hyster. Nov.2 of 2001! A little over a year and I'm still having problems, though not as bad. I started Detrol LA last year, and the dry mouth and headaches really got to me. It helped somewhat with the spasms (also don't have incontinence or freq.) just have pressure and feelings like my bladder is never empty. I went off it after Thanksgiving, I found a website:
thenaturalbladder.com
and they have different supplements (herbal) for diff. bladder problems from infections to spasms. I went on the Bladder-Q and it has helped (took about 3 wks. to start helping) with the pressure somewhat. It is so frustrating though, I can feel the spasms worsen when I hold it too long, after bms, or sex (very infrequent lol!!!) At this far post I never thought this would still be happening. I did have a lot of work done on the bladder since it was adhered to the uterus, and they had to sever it off before removing the uterus only. I guess it did not like that at all!!!! I'm going to a G.I Dr. to rule out Irritable Bowel syndrome because my bowels were distended on an ultrasound. Who knows...I worry about another adhesion of my bladder to my bowel or something else. Well keep in touch Michelle, and keep your chin up.
Hugs,
Paula

Detrol LA question

Hey Paula,

Thanks for the response. Actually, I was able to quit taking the Detrol last Thursday and although I still have some discomfort when my bladder is full, at least I am not in the bathroom every 30 minutes and I am able to sleep through the night.

Sex might aggravate my bladder... I was wondering about that ... wondered if I was imagining it or if it was coincidental. Jury still out on that one. DH and I will be apart this weekend and if the break helps, then I guess that might shed some light.

Take care and thanks again.

Detrol LA Feedback

I have been on Detrol LA for about 2 years. If it wasn't for it, I would be in some serious trouble. I went from 4-5 times a night to about 1 sometimes none. The only side effect i got from it was dry mouth. I would make sure that i took it at bedtime and it never seemed to bother me. I am alomst 2 year hyst. but had surgery Nov 22 and they took the left ovary/tube reconstructed the bowels and fixed the bladder. I have always had trouble with the bladder. I have fought Endometriosis for the past 11 years. I am still battling it even though I have had a hyst. I still have the right ovary though. I hope it works for you. It has helped me in every way possible. I have also been suffering from Depression and am taking Wellbutrin SR which is a lifesaver too. I wish you the best and i hope this helps.

Detrol LA

Belinda,
I just read your post am I'm sorry you have been having problems for prolonged periods of time too. Were you taking the Detrol for spasms too??? You mentioned the frequency of having to go 4-5 times a night. I do not have freq. at all, but just feel like I have to go. I had the adhesion of the bladder to the uterus so I think the bladder just got very angry when it was moved around so much. Have you had spasms since your most recent surgery? Was it the endo. that caused the surgery? You mentioned reconstruction of the bowel and work on the bladder? I'm going to a G.I Dr. March 19th to check out the bowels because I've been having a on and off again pain on my rt. side and they checked for an ovarian cyst and found that on the ultrasound my bowels looked to be filled with gas and I had "multiple loops." I'm afraid of adhesions too which don't show up on anything but by a lap. Did you have these? Well thanks for the post Belinda on the Detrol, I'm glad it has helped you!!!

Keep healing,
Paula

DETROL TO DITROPAN

I was on Detrol then tried the Ditropan when the Detrol was no longer of any use. Then had an AP repair and sling....then back on Detrol. Said screw it - because it didn't work - the uro was "honkerblonked" (pardon the pun) and so it was basically "ok if you don't want to use the med prescribed I can't help you." DUHHH it didn't work!

GOOD LUCK!
