Cervical Cancer/Radical Hysterectomy

Hey Jones -

I had a rad. hyst. for stage 1BI cervical cancer too. Was perfectly healthy prior to my diagnosis, got the results from biopsy quick and went into surgery 2 weeks after my diagnosis. I, fortunately enough, was able to keep my ovaries, so I wasn't forced into surgical menopause. My surgery got all of the cancer so I didn't need any further treatment. I was on my couch for about a week than started doing more and more. My supra-pubic cath bothered me more than my incision believe it or not. Alot of people have problems with bladder and bowel function post-op, but most get normal function back.

Yes, it's an extremely scary situation to have to go through, but you have to stay positive!!! Being scared and looking forward to problems post-op is not what you want to do. Try and stay away from looking into the bad things that could happen, consider the good, no more cancer!! Remember to take it easy post-op, do what your doctor says and *don't* be afraid to ask questions.

Hang in there!!! Before you know it a year will have passed and this will all seem like an extremely vivid dream

Thanks, you guys are great. A few have even PM'd me with encouraging words.

I'm feeling somewhat better now about all this. The enormity of it all was just so much to take, and I was beginning to panic.

Now, about that catheter..... if I need to wear it for awhile, do I need to learn to insert and remove it? Or are there connections outside the body?
