I had been taking Evening Primrose and Fish Oil, but I think the Fish oil was upsetting my stomach. I have read that Flax Seed can be used instead of the Fish oil. What is your thought on that?

Hi Chris!

Well, this gets complicated and I have a hard time explaining what I think is going on.

The short answer is that it's probably better to eat fish two to three times a week--tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovies (I found a great anchovy salad dressing for instance)--than take either.

But as for flaxseed, if evening primrose oil is working, then it works because you are missing an enzyme that converts LA into GLA. If you are missing that enzyme, then flaxseed cannot convert into omega 3 fatty acids. Flaxseed needs that same missing enzyme to work. (Also flaxseed can be powerfully laxative, so I wasn't too happy when I tried it!)

So flaxseed is probably not delivering the omega 3 fatty acids that work with the evening primrose oil. Of course, they really need to do more research, but this is the clearest picture that I can get of what's going on. So, if evening primrose oil does not do anything for you, flaxseed works great.

So, for me, evening primrose oil makes a very real difference. With it, I do not have itchy red blisters. Without it, I do. I think it does some other good things for me too, but I think the fact it makes such a clear difference means that I am missing that enzyme. So, I take 1 500 mg capsule of fish oil on days that I don't eat fish and I take it at the end of the day--both to see if I do eat some fish and also so I don't notice that fishy burp.

Hope this helps and isn't just confusing! That's why the best is just to eat fish a couple times a week.

Oh, and there's some thought that flaxseed has phytoestrogens (which fish doesn't). So, if someone is trying to avoid phytoestrogens, it would be better to avoid flaxseed.

Thank you....I think I will stick to the fish oil. I was taking 2 500 mg of EPO and 2 500 mg fish oil..I am going to cut the dosage in half....I think I was over doing it. Chris
