HRT and alittle confused

Hello sisters

I'm alittle confused about HRT and hoping somebody could answer this question. When does your dr. start you on it? I had a TAH/BSO on 2-8 and saw my gyn 1 week later to have my staples removed. He never mentioned anything about HRT at that time so I'm wondering if he's waiting until I start to have really bad menapausal symptoms. So far things haven't been to bad...night sweats and some crying jags. Also what are the biggest benefits to HRT in your opinions. I'm really trying to make as informed decision as possible because I have epilepsy and am concerned how all this may affect my seizure control which has never been very good to begin with, and in the last few days have had an increase in some small seizures. Although those could very well be due to the fact of just having the surgery and being so tired. So any opinions on HRT would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much, I've read so many posts and really value your thoughts on this. This is truly a wonderful place!

HRT and alittle confused

First of all, the Hormone Jungle message board may be the place to get some of these answers. But I'll let you know that I feel (or felt?) the same way as you are feeling now. My doctor told me I'd be having hotflashes/night sweats while in the hospital (I had them BEFORE the surgery so figured I'd have major ones once my TAH on 1/22). So, he gives me a prescription for Premarin .625. Well, no hot flashes/night sweats. Did have the crying phase. The good thing about Premarin is that it protects you from heart disease and osteoperosis BUT long term effects can be breast cancer. So, at my 4-week visit with the good doctor I decided to go on Premarin. I started having manageable hotflashes/night sweats but nothing real, real bad. If you decide NOT to go on HRT, make sure you get a supplement to protect you from osteoperosis. Check out the hormone jungle message board. There's a lot of info on HRT. Good luck...tough decision. I hope I made the right one.

Premarin DOES NOT protect you from heart disease. It might provide some help against osteoporosis. The only reason to go on hormone replacement is for hot flash relief, and then only for the shortest time possible, at the lowest possible dose. The NIH study was only for HRT (estrogen/progesterone) however the FDA has warned that doctors should assume estrogen (ERT) is dangerous until proven otherwise.

Hi Barb,

I agree that the Hormone Jungle may be your best source for research. There are a lot of informative articles and links to assist you. Here is a direct link you can click: http://www.hormonejungle.com/

I think you are doing the best thing by doing research to find out information and questions that you want to discuss with your Dr. Taking or not taking HRT is a very personal decision and discussing the pros and cons with your physician is a smart way to proceed. With your history of epilepsy, I'm sure that there are possible drug interactions that may need to be considered, along with other things.

There are some very strong opinions regarding HRT, but only you and your Dr. can make the best choice for you. Being informed will help you make that choice!

Best wishes and s

Hormones and seizures are related, so get on the phone and talke to your neurologist right now to find out what kind of replacement hormones he thinks you should be on before you lose more seizure control!

Love, Aline
