A question about parts to keep ?

Hi, I am getting a hyst. this month. My doctor will do a abdominal one. I am confused about women talking about keeping this or that or getting it all out . My doctor just said a total hyst.
Is it better to keep some parts? I know I have one bad ovary that gets cysts on it, but the other one is ok. I also suffer from bleeding to the point I have anemia and have to take anemia meds 3 x a day. I have had laps and various other things done, but they were only a temp fix to the problem, so I almost welcome a hyst. to be free from the bleeding and pain I suffer every month...no to mention the pre menopause. I am 47, and all my kids are grown and gone. I feel like I want to be free of it, and enjoy things again, without being bedridden 3-4 days a month.
What are the benefits if any, of keeping certain parts ? and if he takes ALL my parts, will I have to take hormones everyday?
Any info would be greatly appreciated
Kim K.
p.s this site is just wonderful !

A question about parts to keep ?

Hi there Kim

Welcome to Hystersisters. Isn't it a great site?

I had a TAH/LSO (total abdominal hyst - with cervix removed)/left ovary removed. My right ovary was fine, so it was left in place. It didn't go into shock and 15 months later is still working fine, so I don't require HRT.

You really need to discuss this with your dr and come to an agreement you are happy with about what is going and what is staying.

If everything is removed, in most cases HRT is required. Once again, please discuss this with your dr.

I am sure other ladies will come along with more answers for you.

All the very best wishes,

A question about parts to keep ?

I did not have all the issues you have to contend with medically. But in choosing partial or total hysterectomy, they are usually talking about taking out ovaries or not.

I had no cysts, but at 49, I was told to remove them along with the uterus, that being the medical protocol - that is, anyone undergoing gynecological surgery past a certain age should remove ovaries as well.

Why is it the medical protocol? Because of the 1.5% chance of ovarian cancer. So why for the 1.5% chance do I have to do it, I asked. The answer was that ovarian cancer is not detected until too late, it is a nasty and aggressive cancer, and one which causes much suffering.

I went for a number of opinions. Only one out of five said I did not have to. The intellect won out over the emotion. I opted for removal with immediate hormone replacement therapy, as I did not want to deal with the side effects of ovary removal and instant menopause.

Best of luck and speedy recovery.

A question about parts to keep ?

Hi Kim: I had a LAVH/BSO and Bladder Sling 4 months ago. I am 46 so I decided to take the doctors (more than one) advise and remove both overies. I didn't want to chance ovarian cancer later on down the road. It is a very personal decision for each of us to make. I immediately went on ERT and am doing fine. Please let us know what you decide to do. My DH and I are looking forward to coming to Nashville in September 2004 for a ships reunion....this time I know I won't be bleeding, lol

A question about parts to keep ?

Thanks for your replies. I talk to my Dr again on Friday. I have been asking women I know who have had hyst. whether or not they had part or complete hyst to see how they did with both kinds. I have already started into peri menopause, and have night sweats, hot flashes ect, so I know the drill on those.
A few of the ladies I talked to had a complete one, and wear the hormone patch now to get them through the rough spots.
As you said, it could be my age as to why he wants to remove everything.

I will know more after I talk to him on Friday.

thanks again,
Kim
