no external but 5 internal

Hey Ladies,
Met with the rad/onc on Tuesday. CT looked good, one slightly enlarged lymph node, but not big enough to worry about, liver was not the size of Vermont and all of those other funny looking things in my gut were normal. Doc thought it was funny the report said my cervix looked enlarged. Maybe I need to find out if the radiologist that read the CT has an enlarged liver..........and drinks on the job!
Rad doc says we will do 5 high dose internals which will leave the option open for external if I need it at a later date. Since it is vaginal cancer he only needs to so 1 cm deep with this, but pointed out that vaginal is rare so it's anyones guess.
Was also told not to eat or drink after midnight (getting tired of this) in case they have to sedate me, will be cathed if I can't go 4 hours with out peeing (is 4 hours over 30 minutes? duh) and will be hurting pretty good after #3, so 4 and 5 are going to really stink.
Hubby perked up after he told him I have to have sex 4 times a week or use the dilator. I'm thinking this will work for the first couple of months, then I'm going to have to go shopping for Viagra. Insurance will cover that, right? Cause I'm thinking they don't cover male escorts. I'm just kidding, but that is an interesting idea........wonder how you would submit that........?
Also will have follow up CT's at 3 month and then every 6 after.
Anyway, I came out of this with a good feeling and I'm happy not to have to have external. I've searched and can't find anyone who has had over 3 internals, so that does have me wondering about 5. He said the first ones aren't any worse than a sunburn. Like I've had my vagina sunburned before! Just got a visual on that, it involved mirrors and people looking at me oddly on the beach.......Never mind. Just wondering if anyone has had five.
I think I'll shut up now before I get kicked out of here. I need you guys too much.

Hi Pam..

Glad that all went well and that you sound so perky. Attitude is a large part of fast recovery. I know that for a fact!!

Hope all goes well with the radiation. Will be thinking of you.

Brenda,
Didn't have cervical cancer, just CIS. They found the vaginal after. I keep thinking they missed something, so gyn/onc re-ran tests from hyster. He thinks they had to miss something too, but havent' heard anything. Mine is concidered primary vaginal cancer. I know this doesn't explain anything, but it is what I have been told.
I just wonder how many papers are going to be written on me. These guys just like to see something new. Men!
To be honest, I really don't like being different, now if they called me a rare beauty, that would be okay, but a rare cancer......I'm thinking I can do without that.

's Pam!

How good to hear from you again! I'm glad to see you have a plan of action now. When do you start your treatments? Will they be weekly? I have racked my brain to come up with anyone who has had more than 3 internals, but can't come up with anyone.

When they did your vaginectomy, was your vaginal cancer found adjacent to your vaginal cuff, or was it separate from your vaginal cuff? I only ask because mine was distant from my cervix--just inside my vaginal opening. So, clearly, mine had not spread from the cervix but was growing slowly on its own. Fortunately (sort of, I guess), I'd been having symptoms before my hysterectomy, so asked my doc to check it out when he did my LEEP. I often wonder if I'd not asked him to checkit, if it would have eventually progressed to invasive cancer instead of carcinoma-in-situ.

Keep us posted, Pam! We are with you in and spirit!

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, but Spring has sprung in GA and I have been trying to get my gardens in order before the doctors make me feel crappy again! Sorry Jeanine, I know it isn't in the 70's in our beloved Hoosier state, but it is HERE! So I had to get busy! Don't hate me because I'm warm.
Start the internals on the 19th, one per week. Of course no one else has had 5. That is just me being different.
As for the vaginectomy, they did remove the cuff, just to be safe, but it was found farther down, but to my understanding, the worst area (the part he could eye-ball) was still in the upper third, but it was growing on it's own also. And yes, Jeanine, I think it was lucky for you it was found then. I'm not convinced that anyone even looked in the vagina on me, because as I have been told many times, that just doesn't happen. Guess it does! I have a feeling my GYN will be looking the next time and hopefully keep someone else from having to have more surgeries and radiation.
In fact, I think every women here should insist that they look at the vagina before surgery. It sure would have saved me alot of time and trouble and money and emotional duress and, and, and don't get me on a soap box!
Brenda, good luck on the pap. Tell them to check ALL of your vagina.
