any insight on anemia, iron pills are wrecking havoc on my bowels

Dear Sisters,
I guess I'm still just a miserable mess. After my bladder sling surgery, my doctor said I was very anemic because of a lot of blood loss and he has given me iron pills, 325 mgs, saying take 2 a day or if they bother me take one a day. I've only been able to manage one a day, and even still they upset my stomach, even though I take with food, and aggravate my already aggravated bowels. I'm bloated, I take stool softeners and drink metamucil, alternately, and combine the bowel aggravation with the bladder spasms and catheter and I'm just feeling lousy!!!!I have been eating cream of wheat for iron and trying to eat good iron rich veggies. Yesterday I didn't take the iron pill cause I wanted a break from the awful bowel stuff. Not taking it did help, but I'm afraid to totally not take anything if the anemia was really bad like my docotr said? Any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone dealt with anemia after surgery? I'm 11 days post-op from the bladder sling. I appreciate all of your support and allowing me to whine and vent. You are all in my prayers as well.

Druid: If you eat meat, be sure to drink orange juice or take vitamin C at the same time. Heme iron is the most absorbable and that's in meat. You need vitamin C to absorb iron. Did Dr. give you ferrous sulfate? That's one of the harshest. I'd try for the food source. Do you like liver? When I had anemia my numbers went sky high when I started eating liver.

yep, the harshest

Hi,
Thank you for the advice. The doctor did give me ferrous sulfate. Why do they do that when they know it's harsh? I am taking vitamin C. I will try to eat liver and some beef. Anything would be better than this. It seems like no matter what I eat, I am so bloated after I feel like I am going to explode. Maybe I haven't even gotten rid of all the gassy symptoms from the surgery yet as well. Gas-x doesn't seem to help. I appreciate your reply.

Hi Druid

I had the anemia pre-op and had to deal with the iron issue- 2x a day just like you are doing. I took the pill with the stool softener in it although I don't think that helped much.. there is nothing worse than having your bowels stuck.. I would call Dr tomorrow and see if you could maybe take something stronger to help you- the last thing you want to do is get real backed up- I had that right after hyster and just thinking about the pain makes ..

hope you feel better soon and sending cyber s your way!!

When my doctor told me to take iron for anemia after my surgery, I cringed at the thought of bowel problems. My doc recommended an iron product called "Slow FE". You can find it in any drug store or grocery store. I never had any bowel problems with it!

Hi Druid, There is a product available at Walmart called Perfect Iron. There are No side effects from it at all. And it does raise your iron a lot. I also take 500 mg of magnesium every night and it works well. Good luck! jody

Druid,
I take a natural Iron supplement called Hema PLus it is made by a company called Tidwell Labs. You have to buy it in a natural healthfood store. I have taken this for years because on my heavy bleeding issues. My Dr. told me to continue taking it for up to 6 months after my TVH because of being anemic for so long. It does not upset my stomach, I take it with my evening meal. I was surpised my Dr. approved a natural product. I just took him the bottle and he said it was good stuff. I found out about this product from a Nutritional Dr. (Alternative Medicine) Hope this helps! B41

A liquid supplement

Hi Druid,

There is another concoction available at health food stores - I think it's called Floradix - that is supposed to be a good way to get iron. For sure try to get another type of iron since what you are taking is causing so many problems for you. In the meantime you could even take it every other day - whatever you can do to get some iron without making yourself miserable. I also ate liver a couple of times a week along with orange juice plus lots of dark leafy greens and other iron rich foods. The pills were way to harsh for me. A couple of times I ended up needing to get iron injections for awhile. So there are other ways to get iron. You don't have to depend on just the pills you've already tried.

Hope you find something that works for you. You don't need this on top of everything else!!

I agree with JodyS about the magnesium. I know several women that had bowel problems but once they added a daily magnesium supplement, the bowel problems disappeared.
