Has Counseling Helped?

Hello fellow sisters.
A year and 4 months ago I had a TAH after trying for a year to get pg w/ our first. We found I had cervical cancer and had the hys 2 weeks later.
We did lots of research and I really was OK with the fact that I would never be able to have my husbands baby (which is a seperate issue from just 'having children') and it was business as usual after surgery. Well, here I am a year later, and after we thought I had cleared the emotional hurdle, I wind up bursting into tears at a baby shower (totally unexpectedly) and then just last week, a former co-worker asked when we were going to start our family and that got me started again. I had been asked that question many times and it had never affected me like that before, so now I am wondering if it's going to get worse before it gets better. I feel like I have a hole in my heart where our baby should be.
I think maybe I have repressed feelings, everyone tells me I haven't 'greived' for it yet, but I really don't think I need to.
So I would like to hear from my fellow sisters whom have had counseling and their stories of whether or not they felt it helped them and to what extent.

So please, if you have had a similar experiance, and would like to share your counseling feelings, I would be greatly appreciative.

God Bless-

Has Counseling Helped?

Please accept my sympathy. I know how awful it is when the reality sets in about the loss of fertility.

I went to an inferility counselor for a couple years and I have never regretted it. She helped my get through my anger and grief and provided ways to cope with things like showers and birth announcements.

I don't think you ever really "get over it." How can you? But eventually you find a different life-course and that is the way you live in the sunshine again.

Peace to you.

Has Counseling Helped?

I agree with Cheryl. A counsellor has helped me immensely. Of course, I have to bring myself and my willingness to work on things to the sessions. I think you're right in thinking the lid is lifting off the grief you repressed. A counsellor is a safe neutral place to take the emotions you don't want to "burden" anyone else with. You might have to look around a little to find the right person, but the right person can make a big difference.

Thanks!

Thanks ladies for your time and effort in replying to me. I am going to look into finding couseling. I don't know where I am going to start, but I will ask around and I know I will find it soon. I know it's not easy sharing about counseling so I really do apprecitate it.

Thanks again,
Mfn
