I had a vaginal fistula too

I am so happy to have found this web site. The support is wonderful. I just wish I found it during my nightmare. I had a botched hysterectomy in Nov and 10 days post op I started peeing without any control. I finally got to see my GYN after days of putting me off saying, "it's normal" "do Kegal exercises". I was very frustrated. Finally I saw my GYN and she catherterized me immediately and got me an appt. with a urologist. I had an IVP (the prep is not fun) but the x-ray doesn't hurt. I also had a cystoscopy (sp?) which confirmed a vaginal fistula. I had to wait 3 months being catheterized the entire time for the repair. Had to heal from the abdominal hysterectomy first. The repair was on Feb. 4th. I was catheterized for 4 weeks in 2 places...transvaginal and suprapubic. The suprapubic cath was very uncomfortable because it tugs no matter how careful you are. I finally got both cath's out last week and am peeing like a woman again. I have no energy still and have a lower back ache all the time. I am starting work on Wednesday. I know my employers will be willing to let me work short hours if need be. To those who have had this nightmare I want to say it WILL get better. I am 5 weeks post op from the second surgery and other than fatigue I'm doing better. Having some night sweats though and I still have one ovary.
My thoughts are with those who are going through what I went through but remember there will be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Best Wishes.

I had a fistula too

Hello Everyone!

Welcome, Renee! Yes this is a wonderful group of ladies who have supported each other through alot. I'm sorry you didn't find us earlier, but it sounds like you are on your way to a good recovery! My repair was about two weeks before yours, I went back to work on March 3rd. I still have occasional backaches if I'm on my feet too much. Mostly the only problem I have is my bladder gets sore if I don't drink enough water (which I often forget!)
Take care, you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Lots of hugs to you!

I had a fistula too

Thanks Louise for your response. I was wondering if this lower back ache was normal. I just got back from a short walk because it started to rain and my back was hurting and I don't want to over do it. Thanks also for reminding me to drink water!!!
Did you have a vaginal repair or abdominal. I was afraid to go vaginal because the urologist said he may not be able to reach the hole so I went with abdominal surgery again. I am not recovering as quickly as I did from my abdominal hysterectomy. I'm still so swollen and tired. Guess I'm old!
Thanks for all the support.

I had a fistula too

I had an abdominal repair-they tried to do it vag but the fistula was too high up. I had alot harder recovery, too after the fistula surgery. The first couple of the weeks were the worst!

Seems like I do ok while I'm at work 'cause I push myself, but on my days off, I'm so ehausted I just do nothing! My family is getting the worst of me and I need to find a better balance somehow.

Drinking water is so important, I feel sooo much better when I drink at least 6 glasses a day.

Take care,

I had a fistula too

Hi Renee . Welcome to hyster sisters. I currently have a fistula, vesico vaginal. I had my tah/bso vertivcal insision. I also had endo, ovarian cysts and my rt ovary was fused to the pelvic wall, and adeno, on Jan 21, I started leaking on feb1st. After the second week I got my catheter, just a regular one. I also had the ivp and cat scan, and had the cystoscopy done last friday. I am still waiting for a surgery date, I have an appt with the gyn specialist tomorrow, and hopefully I can get it soon, This week has been more leakage than before the cath, even with it in I have floods. My regular gyn that did the hist is going to assist the specialst,. So far was told that they are going to try and fix it vaginally. I have been having horrible bladder spasms, The Detrol la didn't work, so now I am on the b/o suppositries(belladonna and opium.) some days even that doesn't help.
I had a ruptured appendix in 1981, which lead to alot of adhesions, then had 2 laparoscpies for endo and ovarian cysts since then then the hyster was difficult.

Hope you are well.

s and :comfort to all my lovely sisters

I had a fistula too

Renee Welcome!

I too had a TAH in Nov and 3 weeks post developed a fistula. I had it repaired abdominally and vaginally on Feb 3. I had the supra pubic in for about 16 days, preferred it to the foley. From Nov to Feb I was in diapers, didn't have a catheter.

Feeling great now, just tired when I over due it. Also I find that coffee or tea without or without caffiene doesn't agree with me, goes right through me and makes me run to pee (not sure I will make it). No problem living without coffee or tea, water is good along with my cranberry juice.

I too found this sight after my hysterectomy, at least I had the sisters' support for my fistula surgery and recovery.

Isn't this the best site you have ever come across?

I had a fistula too

I can't believe how often this happens. Is anyone trying to arbritrate/sue the doctor. I've been told this is a "complication" and not mal practice. I've been keeping track of all out of pocket expenses/doctor cost/RX costs/ and lost wages but I feel I should be reimbursed for pain and suffering. Anyone get money from this "complication" ???
Thanks in advance.
Good luck to all,

I had a fistula too

No law suits here. I had endrometriosis and fibroids. Apparently, vesicovaginal fistulas can happen after difficult hysterectomys.

I had a fistula too

Good Morning Ladies,

I feel as if I know you already. Thanks again for all the answers and support.

I awoke in a sweat again. Had to remove all the bedding for washing. Even though I have one ovary I assume I'm doing the menopause thing. I will be 50 years old this year.

I was told that I still may not have a "good repair" and won't really know until I've been uncatherterized for 6 more weeks. Have another appointment with Urologist in mid April. He said if I haven't sprung a leak by then I'm out of the woods. Has anyone been given the same story?

I am still really swollen and am starting work next week. I don't know what clothes I'm going to wear as my clothes are too tight around my belly. I also fear I am going to leak. I assume these are "normal" fears after going through all this.

To all the woman who are going through this you will be in my thoughts for a successful and speedy recovery.

Thanks again for all the support. I'm so glad I found you all.

Hope your day is a good one. Hubby and I are going out tonight....I'm going to try and dance a bit.
