Ultrasound results and questions

Yesterday I received the results of my follow up ultrasound. I am being followed for an ovarian cyst. I have a gyn/onc due to two previous malignancies....breast and colon.

During my last appointment in January, it was highly recommended that I get a TAH BDO. The Dr. was not too concerned about the cyst. He felt it looked benign. He was more concerned with the big picture. I have had two previous adenocarcenomas and he was worried about the genetic risk I might be carrying for ovarian or uterine cancer (I did test negative for the BRCA 1 and 2 genes). My plan was to hold off until this summer so that I could take advantage of nicer weather....it has been a tough winter in the Northeast.

Here is my question: The ultrasound report said "Left ovarian cystic lesion containing a mural nodule concerning for neoplasm. Definite flow is not seen within the mural nodule" The cyst is 2 cm and contains a 1 cm mural nodule. My January Ultrasound report stated "1.7 cm cyst with a 1 cm polypoid component" so there have been some slight changes.

How scared should I be? My Dr. is not throwing me on the table yet, but rather recommended a 6 week follow up ultrasound to determine whether the surgery should be sooner rather than later.

I know that so many of you know so much based on your medical degrees through experience. You can ask me about breast and colon....but the ovaries are new to me.

s Judy

I am so sorry you are going through this worry yet again. Enough is enough!!! There does exist that ugly triangle of breast, ovarian and colon.
If I were you, I'd want the surgery sooner, rather than later.
If by chance it is cancer, ovarian is so curable in an early stage.
Keep in touch.

Ultrasound results and questions

Hi Judy

There is a breast-colon-ovarian syndrome called something like lynch family cancer syndrome.

My mom had that triad, and after her ovarian was dxed in August 01, my brca tests were inconclusive, and then in Nov 01, I had a weird ultrasound finding. My CA-125 was elevated. I had planned on a "pre-emptive" BSO, but the ultrasound finding and elevated CA-125 made my gyn onc change an elective proceedure sort of planned for the summer of 02 to an urgent one done in January.

I'm glad I pushed my surgery forward. Did they do a CA-125?

Listen to your Dr.

If he wants to go sooner rather than later, I'd follow that. By the way, if he feels there is a possibility of malignancy, ask for a referral to a gyn/onc. They're the best in case! Ellen
