Pre-Opt preparation

Hi, I'm new to the board. Not sure yet of all your abbreviations. I am scheduled to have a abdominal radical/modified hysterectomy on May 13. I will still have my own ovaries. My question is: For those of you who have had your surgery, what can I do to prepare for this. Is there anything I can do ahead of time to make the healing process better/faster? Any ideas on anything you would have done different would be appreciated. Thanks!

Whatever you do to get yourself centered and feeling positive is what you should do, IMHO. Get whatever information you need to get you feeling confident, make sure you have faith in your doctors, take good care of yourself so that you are rested, and surrender all else to your medical team and whatever Higher Power you may believe in. Surround yourself with people who love you and most of all, love yourself.

That is what worked for me and I can't tell you how much easier it was for me than any other surgery I have ever had.

Thanks for the positive reinforcement. I have been totally positive through this whole thing. I'm not as worried about the surgery, the wonders of anesethic, and epidurals, but more worried about the pain of not being able to move when I get home. I'm not a good person to ask for help, ask my husband! I just want to try and rest and heal, but also be a good wife and mom. (I have a 8 and 3 yr old). I'm keeping a positive outlook, I know after it's all said and done I'll fine, and we'll all be fine. Thanks!

Joselle gave you excellent advice. I also am a big believer in knowing everything there is to know. That's one of the reasons I was so glad to find my Sisters here. I was beyond well-informed by the time I read the messages here!! When I went for my pre-op, I had a list of questions that impressed my !

I can't really think of anything I would have done differently. I approached the day of surgery with a positive attitude. I totally expected my doctor to take care of me, just as he had been doing all along, and he did a super job.

I kept myself busy in the days leading up to my surgery. I worked until the day before, straightened up my house, calmed my DSO down repeatedly..He was more nervous than I was!!

A good post-op tip that worked for me: as much as you safely can. It helps to ease gas pains, encourages bowel movements, and generally makes you feel good. Drinking water is also important for the same reasons!!

Best of luck to you!
