maybe abnormal pap

I got a call today from my ob. she did a pap 2 wks ago. said mine was barely, not really, possibly not right. (my words) she caught me by surprise so I can't remember exactly. Said she'd like to do another test that could show a possible "virus". If that came back negative then she'd stop there. I go on monday 4/7. I'll get the exact name of the test. just courious if anyone has any clues. should I be concerned. thanks,

The virus your DR is probably looking for is called HPV. My DR told me about 80% of all women have this virus. They are actually working on a vaccine for this now. The virus doesn't cause problems in the majority of people, but there are several different strains of it. It can lay dormant for many years. It is suspected to be the cause of certain types of gyn problems. I BELIEVE (I'm not sure) that they have to do a small biopsy on your cervix to test for the HPV. After my pap came back abnormal, I had a colposcopy which is like a pap but they use a microscope to look at your cervix. It doesn't go inside you. I was able to see it all on a computer monitor. My DR had a camera on his microscope. He then did a small biopsy of the unusual looking place. For me, that came back worse than the pap and I then had a LEEP done. This is a little more invasive. They numb your cervix and take a thin layer off, which in most cases takes care of the whole problem. There are other procedures that can take care of problems too, like freezing your cervix, cone biopsies, etc. Try not to worry too much until you know. Stress can do a lot to your body. Mental well-being is a good healer. Best of luck to you. Keep us informed.

Hi Snail,

Cindy did a bang-up job of a summary, IMHO. If you'd like more info, Transplant posted an excellent link that you can find if you click on the link below. I think it will set your mind at ease somewhat. Good luck,
