Ask the Oncologist

There may be concerns about manicures/pedicures with cutting and/or filing. The onc should also know about massage--some OK it and I think some are wary if I remember things on my big board correctly. The hospital I use (where our clinic used to be) has complementary medicine and a cancer care package and does massage--so if you have a resource like that you can ask too. Ellen

Maybe check with doctor about full massage...

Hi Patty,
I think facials, pedicures (especially with foot massage - heaven) and manicures are a great idea. Anything to nurture the soul during this time is helpful. I'm not sure about full body massage though. I have read some articles that advise against it during chemo. I do know that you tend to bruise more easily. But I did have a facial and pedicures during my treatment and found them relaxing and fun.

Good luck to you and your mom.

chemo question ( massages, pedicure etc.)

I was told absolutely no manicures or pedicures due to insufficiently cleaned
tools. Also, many manicurists cut cuticles which is a NO NO! One nurse said
"if you have to , then take all your own tools".

My doc OK'd massages but said to make sure they are done by someone good
and no deep tissue. I can do a "hot rocks" massage, too.

I went to get a facial but it was suggested I wait until after chemo, since my skin
could be more sensitive to the things used at the time. The girl who was going
to do it has a mom who has been OVCa free for 8 yrs!

chemo question ( massages, pedicure etc.)

Hi Patty..

I guess my oncologist was a little more liberal than most others. My only restriction during chemo was to stay out of the sun as much as possible, or wear sunscreen.

Check with your moms oncologist and see what she says. That whole package sounds like a very relaxing gift.
