Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

Hi, I've heard that drinking cranberry juice and lots of water before and after surgery can help reduce the risk of infection. Any truth in this? I know it can help with cystitis, but hysterectomy? Would like to hear if anyone else has heard the same.

Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

Hi, I drink cranberry juice because it seems to help me avoid bladder problems. But I've not heard of it helping with surgery. I'm interested in what others have to say about that too.

Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

Hi Pauline Yes, cranberry helps make the inside of the bladder 'slippery' so bacteria have a harder time grabbing hold in there. My DR had me drink tons of cranberry juice mixed 50/50 with water after my hyst because I had a foley for the first week at home, which tends to increase the likelihood of UTI's and bladder infections. I didn't get one!

Do check with your DR about whether it's OK for you.

Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

Hi, I have the capsules for traveling and when I'm out of juice. I really like cranberry juice so I drink it whenever I can. The capsules work about the same for me.

Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

I don't know about cranberry juice specifically but Vitamin C is supposed to work wonders to aid healing. Some A-DR's are now giving their patients a 5000 mg shot of Vitamin C just before they send them off to recovery. A few studies have been done and there are indications that the Vit C speeds the recovery process.

A few years ago my husband had to have major jaw surgery which involved a lot of cutting into the bone. I made sure hubby got at least 5000 mg of Vit C everyday during his recovery. In all his post-op appointments his surgeon had to doublecheck hubby's chart because his bone healing was at least 2 weeks ahead of schedule. A side benefit is Vit C had a laxative effect when you take a lot of it so he had NO constipation on his liquid diet.

A word of caution: This is only my personal experience and observations. If you plan on taking Vit C PLEASE discuss your plans with your DR. 5000 mg is considered a mega-dose and it can cause unhealthy side effects in some people (like excessive bleeding).

Actually, this might be a good time to mention that it's important to consult your DR about ANY vitamins or supplements you have been taking or plan to take either before or after your surgery.

May of our DRs have told us to stop taking any Vitamin C or Vitamin E, echinacea or aspirin (among others) from two weeks before surgery to two weeks after because of their blood thinning properties.

Cranberry juice can reduce risk of infection?

I drink cranberry juice every night. I also take Metamucil, and I mix it into the juice.

Since I've started drinking the juice, I feel very cleansed. I had difficulty urinating right after surgery, and the juice seemed to flush me..

I didn't know that cranberry juice was helpful towards infection, surferbabe....Glad to hear it though. I never did have even one prob with infection - Maybe this is why!
