Ovaries working or not working post op

I have a question that my doc really didn't have an answer for. He's a great surgeon but not a wealth of information! lol

I asked this in the Chat room and one of the monitors that maybe someone over here might be able to help or direct me some where for an answer.

I am 5 weeks post op with TAH and kept my ovaries. My surgery was for early, early cervical cancer. I had been on birth control for about 18 years... (yeah DS is 18..that is right). 10 years on the pill and 8 years on Depo.

Now, I am not any birth control (big duh there! lol). I am having all the problems with "sleeping" ovaries that I have been reading about here. Insomina big time, mood swings, some hot flashes, some night sweats... just like the little girls are not working. A possiblity that I knew going into this surgery.

But my major question that I can not get an answer to is this:
Could it be possible that my ovaries ARE working but because my body has not had full hormones from the ovaries in so many years that it is reacting and going through a period of adjustment?

It makes some sense to me..but I can not any clear answers as to yes or no, if this is possible.

Any advice would be much appreicated...or even web sites I might check out. Just not sure if they are not working or working too well! lol!

thanks!

Ovaries working or not working post op

Hi Cindy The short answer to your question is 'yes' That is, the symptoms you describe could be from your ovaries not working, or they could be an adjustment reaction, it's still a little early to say for sure.

Your DR can do a simple blood test to see if your ovaries are working, or, check out this link about using the basal body temperature method to find out:

You know, many ladies here have found that even though their surgeon was a great DR to do their surgery, he/she isn't the best partner to work on HRT issues with. Do you have an internist or family DR you feel comfortable talking with? You might want to make an appointment to talk about hormone stuff.
