Fluid in the peritoneal cavity is called ascites. There are many conditions that can cause this to happen. Cancer only accounts for about 10% of ascites. An inflamation of many of the abdominal organs can cause this to occur. A lab analysis will most likely be done on the fluid found in your abdomen.
I know this waiting is so hard and my thoughts are with you.

I am so glad there is nothing malignant found. I can understand that you would still be uneasy until the pathology reports are in: I am sure I will be the same. Nevertheless, it looks good. No doubt the ascites is just the result of general inflammation. I'm praying for good results.

The presence of ascites can be indicative of an awful lot of things, including tuberculosis, heart failure, liver disease and a host of other things. When a CT scan revealed that I had a lot of ascites, the range of tests the doctor began doing really terrified me. I actually started crying when they did the TB test.

Ascites can also be present in a host of benign conditions. I had thought my ascites was due to a post-appendectomy infection of some sort, but . . . I was wrong. Did your doctor say he had any concerns about the fluid? Or was he just letting you know what they found?

Oddly, though I did have a malignancy, the pathology on the fluid they removed (1000ccs, or one liter) did not reveal malignant cells. The doctor that told me that kind of laughed and said that he thought there must be a mistake, since they had taken so much clearly cancerous stuff out of me.

If your doctor's not worried, and he says everything is benign, then the fluid probably resulted from your benign condition. Just watch your belly to make sure that more fluid doesn't collect. If it does, let your doctor know.
